Day after the Scottish referendum – We must be Reminded for 2016

This was the message the No vote carried. #Racism

This was the message the No vote carried. #Racism #Sectarianism #Hate

I remember sitting at around 8pm hours before the Polls closed when Kay Burley from Sky News asked an ‘SNP politician at a hall in Glasgow “How do you feel now that you lost” The SNP Politician asked back “How do you know this, the polls are open for a few hours yet” So it was strange for sure. Below I have 3 different reactions. The hate, the hope and the fear. I say again ‘Hope over fear’ In 2016 we have a chance to free Scotland from Westminster by filling Holyrood with Nationalist’s. People who don’t hate, people who have REAL RATIONAL reasons for wanting Whitehall separation. As we are 6 Months away from the 2 vote’s Scottish Elections we must look back, look at the lies, the anger, the hate, the sorrow, looking at our kids and fearing for their future. Allow these 2 video’s and images to burn into you soul, so when the next vote happens we are in more knowledge, the Yes groups MUST stop hating each other. I say the people of Scotland will free Scotland. Below Alex Salmond spoke and said these exact words “It’s not about me, David Cameron, the SNP, it’s about Scotland’s future” We need REAL leaders in Scotland, real people with real emotions, I give you 3 right here, 2 showing humility, 1 after winning an Austerity vote…Let us not let the other one down next time.

[VIDEO] Scotland, listen and be at one with our future!
Alex Salmond tried like many to get people to see sense

How many voted in selfish mode for TODAY or for THAT DAY without thinking about tomorrow or 20/50/100 years from now. One thing I can say 100% here is WE WILL BE FREE BEFORE MY DAUGHTERS HIT HIGH SCHOOL. Both are 5 and 6, Primary 1 and 2, Scotland will be free long before they go to High School aged 12 or 13. We must now Scotland start a new Yes movement, we must come together. Please watch both video’s and also ask “If we are better together, then why did they have to tell us so” We are not better, nowhere in the UK are we better off. The entire UK is suffering and I see and hear that human cost loud and clear. But I am Scottish born and I want a free Scotland. The silent majority that beat us with a 5% swing will be gone by the year 2020. We must allow the circle of life to happen. As I said many times. From 2014 to 2020 we gain 6 years of youthful voters who voted Yes at 70%+, we SADLY lose 6 years of over 65’s who voted No at 70%+, and before you pull that card on me, I could lose both my parents by 2020. See this isn’t about me, you, my parents, your parents, it’s about balance and fairness.

The voice of a VERY DECENT England lad

The voice of a VERY DECENT England lad

I have two wee princess’s here. Do you have young kids? Will you be able to look them in the eye and tell them why you voted whatever way you did when in years to come they ask? I give up on the haters. One of my best mates voted no, he had his reasons, I respect them and we remain friends. I have family who voted no, I still love them. But the people who voted no that I know, I would say 90% regret their no vote, they see the lies now, they see the Austerity cuts now, pensioners lost, the poor lost, people committed suicide, Scotland can stand alone fiscally and if I have to tell you why I don’t think you deserve a vote as you CLEARLY have no idea what you are voting for. With the budget we do get we are 10x better off than our English and Welsh friends as it is, so how GOOD can we become free? I can’t wait for the day I can stand up in a free Scotland knowing my kids have a GOOD LIFE AHEAD. Free from hatred and lies. See Scotland has become the World’s most Politically aware nation. 2020 sounds good to me.. So look again Scotland and decide again Scotland. Think of Scotland, not your Bank account or other selfish reasons

Labour Scotland secretly side with yes? Nicola & Alex, now Lamont speak

Lamont

I KNEW IT AND SAID IT! Scottish Independence could renew Labour When Johann Lamont stood down I suggested perhaps she was deep down a yes voter. I also said I believed at the time through speaking to people and research there was a HUGE yes vote within the Scottish Labour Party, now we almost have proof. Inside Labour Scotland there is a HUGE Yes movement and I would say over 50% if I was prodded with a stick for an educated guess. Their Leader and Vice Leader stood down soon after the No vote last September and I said in a few blogs it was my belief there was a good amount of Labour MP’s being slapped down. Now they have a young girl running the Scottish Labour party almost on her own, Kezia Dugdale is as faithful to Labour as Ruth Davidson was and is to David Cameron. To me they are just modern day noblemen (Woman I know) who are selling their Scottish souls to London.

Whoever made this image was closer to this truth than they were perhaps at the time of making it

Whoever made this image was closer to this truth than they were perhaps at the time of making it

Also remember Alex Rowley? I do as I keep all the small details by writing them of saving links and images, he said this, also you can click all these links > Labour in Scotland must become the party of Home Rule or we will not survive He didn’t come out and say “Labour should back the Yes movement” but looking back, he actually was! So we now have the proof that within Labour in it’s Scottish Branch Office there are Politicians wanting to vote yes, who else resigned? Do we have a list Scotland? That would be interesting. Also looking back they brought in Jim Murphy who was just lost! Gaffe as Murphy doesn’t know Labour housing policy Totally out his depth as Scottish Labour was murdering itself internally while trying to keep on a brave face as the Referendum came and went. We can visibly now see that story, Labour are in BITS in Scotland because most wanted a Yes vote!! WOW or what!! Never let us forget this > The All New ‘Fundilymundily’ Amazing Jim Murphy Blog video!!!!!! Please keep reading beyond the story below, I came up with another few issues I think the Yes movement now must debate

August 17th I suggested Scottish Independence could renew Labour Maybe I was seeing internal Labour killing each other, maybe I should have blogged it more, I am now looking back a year blogging to see if I can find some more evidence or articles then that become more today, things we just didn’t look at and now we do, like many things I am sharing here. What if all along Labour Scotland actually wanted to say “Stuff you London, we are not doing this” Because when Johann Lamont said “Labour London treat Scottish Labour like a branch office” These words by Johann today are more than they were at the time. Now we see Johann was perhaps a yes voter but having to do what she was being paid to do, same “Paid to do” as the BBC allegedly had to do. We remember also Kevin Bridges saying “Everyone in this BBC building wants to vote yes, we have been told not to mention it” Remember? Kevin Bridges admits to BBC lies, 100% Looking back the words were huge, today they are more, especially with Alex Salmond coming out AT LAST on the record saying “The BBC were bias” Kevin Bridges said it, as did many looking back. Now the story is MORE!

Labour should consider having a free vote in any future independence referendum, according the party’s former Scottish leader Johann Lamont.Ms Lamont was speaking as part of a series of BBC Scotland interviews to mark the anniversary of the referendum. The Labour MSP said it was “self-evident” that some people within the Labour movement had accepted that Scotland could be independent. She said a free vote was a debate the party should have.

In the previous interview in the series, Blair Jenkins, the former chief executive of the Yes campaign, appealed to the new Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale to allow members to be allowed to campaign for independence.

He told last week’s Good Morning Scotland programme he thought there would be “very strong pressure” on the party to do that – even if the official position would be against independence.

Mr Jenkins said he would prefer Labour to back a Yes vote but “as a minimum position” they should allow prominent people in the party to campaign against its policy as they did in the 1979 devolution referendum.

Ballot box

She told Good Morning Scotland: “We know that there were Labour people who supported Yes and we need to understand what that was and have that debate inside the party.
“It’ll be for others to decide whether you then make it a free vote. People clearly exercised their vote in the ballot box anyway.”
She added: “If that’s a debate we should have inside the party, why not? Because what is self-evident is that there were people within the Labour movement more broadly who did accept the argument that Scotland could be an independent country.”

Despite saying the idea of a free vote should be debated, Ms Lamont added any decision over independence was “far bigger” than what was voted on in 1979. Ms Lamont also said that “on balance” she believed Labour was right to join with the Conservatives in the Better Together campaign.
But she said Labour should have had a better resourced and more energetic campaign of its own. In the interview she said she felt “pushed to jump” before she left the role but she refused to point the finger of blame at Ed Miliband or at Margaret Curran, an old friend who was at the time shadow secretary of state for Scotland.

~End Story~

As I said in a few blogs this week, THIS IS ABOUT TO GET INTERESTING!!

THIS! IS WHAT I HAVE BEEN HINTING AT!

How many more lies were told? Bad deeds done?

Do you think the SNP and all the lawyers they can afford and lawyers working for free to prove Scotland was wronged would just do nothing? This week Ruth Davidson had her words and alleged actions send to the highest Court in ALL OF SCOTLAND!! And perhaps more of her party were involved in a system to lie to Scotland and wreck the Yes vote, as they went on to do ALLEGEDLY. Something Alex Salmond hit on last week.

AND HE MEANT IT!

AND HE MEANT IT!

Alex Salmond came out and basically blamed the BBC and Nicola Sturgeon said “Cameron is living on borrowed time” This is why I say in the top 4 blogs below “GOOD TIMES ARE COMING” Try and make the pieces fit together and we have a story here. Seatbelts on Scotland, I believe the impossible is about to happen

THE FULL STORY IS NOW VISIBLE!

She warned that independence would bring a new wave of austerity for families in Scotland. Speaking in Glasgow, she called on Scots to unite around shared values which have no borders – the convictions of fairness, equality and community – and to build a Scotland for the many not the few.

Ms Lamont called on Scotland to reunite after a No vote and use the strength of the United Kingdom and the opportunity of devolution to achieve Labour’s goals for the country. She said: “We will need to heal the wounds of a divided Scotland. We will need a vision of a new Scotland which can reunite the country. “Yes we will have a stronger Scottish Parliament with more powers but those are not an end in themselves – they are just a means to an end and that end must be social justice.

“Our priority as a nation should not be erecting a border with England, it should be tearing down the barriers which prevent our young from getting a decent education, which stop families aspiring their dreams, and threaten our elderly with poverty and insecurity. “That should be our focus. A real vision rooted not in dogma of nationalism, but rooted in the real experience, the real hopes, the real dreams of ordinary families throughout this country.”

She added: “We will not be bought and sold for Salmond’s fool’s gold. Instead we will use the strength of the United Kingdom to make Scotland stronger. “Poverty is our enemy not our neighbours. And we don’t need to destroy one country to change our nation.” Ms Lamont was speaking at the Kinning Park Complex today in front of an invited audience of 200.

She also set out the risk to individual families of separating from the UK and said that an “additional wave of austerity” would come after independence. Ms Lamont said that Mr Salmond offers no hope for ordinary people, just tax cuts for the bankers and the rich. She said: “We see from the Yes campaign a beautiful picture of a utopian Scotland where the streets will be paved with gold and milk and honey will flow through the land. All will be equal, no one will be poor and our economy will be booming.

Affront

Speaking at the STUC in Ayr on Tuesday First Minister Nicola Sturgeon labelled Sir John’s comments ‘an affront to democracy.’ She said: “Some of the comments we are hearing this morning from Tory politicians like John Major are actually an affront to democracy. “These are politicians who last year urged Scotland to lead, not leave, the UK. These comments suggest the only thing they think we should do is be prepared to say what they want us to say and vote how they want us to vote. “Let me say this, Scotland has a right to make its voice heard in whatever way Scotland chooses.”

In the final days of the referendum campaign, a leading panel put forward a passionate and clear case for the economic, social, cultural, legal and diplomatic reasons for staying in the union. The event, held in the Usher Hall in Edinburgh on Friday, was attended by over 1000 people and was organised by Working For Scotland.Among the speakers was Kirkcaldy MP Gordon Brown who argued that the future for Scotland should not be to leave the United Kingdom but to lead it.

We must avoid lies Scotland – Inform people, links here!

We must remember the lies of the past

We must remember the lies of the past

The above is proof should we need reminded what the media said, well the Sun newspaper here before the Scottish Parliament general election 2007. I wonder how many people fell for that front page? I often ask how many believed the BBC and all the other media who tried to scare Scottish people into voting against the SNP and Freedom. Looking back 8 years it can be said simply the SNP have done brilliant for Scotland. When Westminster applied the Bedroom tax the SNP paid the fines and refused to have people pay, this is one example of why the SNP is the only choice for Scotland.

Labour time and time again before an election come out with “New Labour New Values” and other “We can make Scotland better” slogans even though history shows Labour are happy to have Austerity cuts in Scotland as well as voting for Trident. Of course we must know Scottish Labour are told what to say and do by London Labour. Think about it seriously why did Johann Lamont resign as Labour leader a month after the referendum stating London treated Scotland as a ‘Branch Office’ Something tells me Johann stood down as she was sick of telling lies and standing up for things she probably didn’t agree with. Of course, I am guessing

So before we vote on May 7th let us remind each other of the lies from the past, even as early as 2014 so we are more in knowledge before we vote. I don’t think many no voters will vote Labour as I know many have stood up and said “How stupid was I” Many have. We will have hard core Labour voters, no voting electorate, here in Scotland but I firmly believe we have way over 90% and more good thinking Scottish people who won’t forget the propaganda in the image above and below my words nor the lies and scary stories told before the referendum. Knowledge is power Scotland. Let us not be as foolish again. My only worry is most take to main stream media and remain in the dark and surrounded by lies, we must get as many Scottish people involved in all the Facebook pages, add your friends, family, add people to them, I will leave some links below where I post everything I do about Scotland. PROJECT FEAR: QUEEN’S ‘FOREBODING’ SCOTTISH INDEPENDENCE PLEA STRATEGICALLY CRAFTED BY WHITEHALL

Britain's Queen Elizabeth

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth

Via: http://rt.com/uk/215307-queen-intervened-scottish-independence/

Surprised? I ain’t. We seen Gordon Brown fool us then retire, we seen Johann Lamont the then Labour leader fool us only to retreat and stand down, she knew she did bad for Scotland. We had so many people telling is it wouldn’t work. David Cameron said “I will not debate with Alex Salmond” but came up to Scotland with a ton of Tory English people to fill a room and beg Scotland to vote ‘NO’ Knowing his and many of his friends jobs would go. So I am not surprised at this.  For the record here is all I wrote about the 2014 Scottish Referendum vote:

It REALLY was this crazy!

It REALLY was this crazy!

https://acenewsdesk.wordpress.com/?s=Scottish+Referendum

https://acenewsdesk.wordpress.com/?s=Nicola+Sturgeon

Downing Street and senior civil servants were so fearful that Scotland’s independence referendum could have sparked the breakup of the UK that they requested the Queen to publicly intervene in the closing days of the campaign, a Whitehall source says. The intervention by Queen Elizabeth II, 88, was scrupulously crafted by her private secretary and Britain’s chief civil servant, a Guardian report revealed Wednesday. The delicately worded plea was constructed in the final phase of the Scottish independence campaign, as Downing Street faced what a senior Whitehall source told the paper was a “meltdown.” Fears ran high in Westminster as polls revealed amplifying support for the pro-independence camp, the source said.

Behind-the-scenes discussions between Britain’s Cabinet Secretary Sir Jeremy Heywood and the Queen’s private secretary Sir Christopher Geidt led to the Queen’s rare public plea, the Guardian reports. Four days prior to the September 18 referendum, the influential Monarch pleaded with Scots to “think very carefully” on their way to the ballot box.

Britain’s cabinet secretary Sir Jeremy Heywood (R), and the Queen’s private secretary Sir Christopher Geidt (L)

Britain’s cabinet secretary Sir Jeremy Heywood (R), and the Queen’s private secretary Sir Christopher Geidt (L)

A high-level Whitehall source who spoke exclusively to the paper said the government hoped the tense negotiations that preceded the Queen’s cautionary words would serve as a warning to Scots they faced a decision “filled with foreboding.” The Whitehall official’s disclosure echoed criticism directed at the British establishment regarding“Project Fear,” as it was dubbed by advocates of Scottish independence. The strategic project was characterized by a ferocious media campaign, and relentless fearmongering stemming from the City of London and Westminster’s political elite. But few expected its tendrils to infiltrate Buckingham Palace.

As the Scottish independence campaign drew to a close, the Queen’s unusual disclosure came as a surprise to many who noted her mostly impartial 62-year reign. Referencing the prospect of Scottish independence while addressing a well-wisher after Sunday service near her historic Balmoral estate in northwest Scotland, the Queen said: “Well, I hope people will think very carefully about the future.”

A seamless design

The strategic intervention was concocted by senior civil servants following Prime Minister David Cameron’s growing concerns the pro-independence Yes camp were gaining an ominous degree of ground in the final stretch of the campaign. As the countdown to the referendum progressed, Whitehall figures allegedly told Buckingham Palace that a few careful words offered by the Queen would help matters.

As part of this plan, Geidt and Heywood are thought to have devised the phrase she later uttered. While shrouded in a veil of neutrality, the words ultimately indicate the Queen’s support for the union. The Guardian’s Whitehall source told the paper the intervention was meticulously calibrated.

“She knew exactly what she was doing, which is, there are two possible responses on the referendum. Either one, you buy into this is a fantastic festival of democracy, or two, you suggest this is a decision filled with foreboding.” “So by saying I hope people will think carefully you imply the second … Without her taking a side, it cast just the right element of doubt over the nature of the decision.”

Advocates of Scottish independence claim “Project Fear” was a scrupulously designed establishment scheme created to ensure the union remained intact. Whether the Queen’s intervention was an explicit extension of this pro-union strategy is a matter of conjecture. But the possibility has not been ruled out. The No campaign’s relentless forecasts of economic peril, dwindling national security, an EU membership in jeopardy, and ruptured NATO relations ultimately overpowered the pro-independence movement’s messages of positivity, hope and empowerment. Many argue “Project Fear” was central to this.

In the wake of a referendum that almost terminated a 307-year-old political union, Westminster still faces many challenges. The Yes campaign’s vision of Scotland as a Scandinavian-style state characterized by inclusivity, egalitarianism, nuclear disarmament and clean energy has been denounced by critics as utopian. However, an appetite for independence remains rife across many parts of Scotland and is unlikely to wane. Buckingham Palace declined to comment on Geidt and Heywood’s alleged discussions concerning the Queen’s intervention.

A Cabinet Office spokeswoman also declined to comment, emphasizing the body does not publicly discuss correspondence “between the Queen’s private secretary and civil servants.”

Labour Face Catastrophe as new poll suggests Labour on track to lose all of their Scottish seats to the SNP

Leaving Scottish Labour in ruin

Leaving Scottish Labour in ruin

Westminster/Hollyrood bombshell for Miliband and Labour. Been reading this all night, it seems Labour could lose at least 37 out of it’s 41 SMP’s seats at Hollyrood. This would turn Scotland yellow, like the image below. I believe in Karma, Labour sold their souls in the Scottish Referendum. With 2nd in charge Anas Sarwar resigning days after the Scottish Labour leader Johann Lamont, with Lamont leaving and letting UK Labour leader Ed Milliband know in no uncertain terms why, she said “Labour’s leadership in Westminster had undermined me, thwarted my attempts to reform the party and treated the Scottish Labour Party like a “branch office” all this has had a huge effect on Scottish Labour members. There is a loophole where the SNP could force another Referendum in 2015 elections for as early as 2016/2017, or just walking from the Union. Others will be better placed than I to call that one. Jim Murphy is making noises about becoming new Scottish Labour leader when it’s likely he will lose his seat in 2015. The shadow international development minister said: “I’m standing not just to be the Scottish Labour leader, which would be a privilege in itself, but I am standing to be our candidate to be first minister.” Personally I don’t trust politics/Labour just now, this could all be staged to fool the easily fooled, SCOTLAND ‘KEEP THE HEID, DON’T BE STUPID AGAIN!

Via STV News You Tube

A remarkable Ipsos Mori poll out onFriday (30th) putting Scottish Labour on just 23%, a massive fall from the 42% they won in 2010 and miles behind the SNP, who rocket to 52%.

STV reports:

“Those who would lose their seat include Jim Murphy, who is standing to be the next leader of Scottish Labour, Douglas Alexander and Margaret Curran… The only Scottish Labour MPs who would survive would be Willie Bain in Glasgow North East, Tom Clarke in Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill, Gordon Brown in Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath and Ian Davidson in Glasgow South West.”

Scotland’s Labour leader Johann Lamont spent £19,697 on bills including travel, hotels and office costs – double that of the country’s First Minister Alex Salmond.

According to government filings, the Scottish National Party’s (SNP) Alex Salmond claimed £9,691 (€12,301, $15,591) for expenses including travel, stationery, mobile phone charges and newspapers.

MSP expenses rose more than £12.5m in 2013 overall.

Conservative’s Ruth Davidson was the second biggest spender on the taxpayers account as a political party leader in Scotland after claiming £17,184 of travel, office and accommodation costs.

Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie claimed mainly for travel expenses, mounting up to £16,394.

Overall, Scottish politicians spent an extra £262,140 in the 2013-2014 tax year.

Party leader allowances fell but staff costs rose.

“The 2.14% rise in members’ expenses last year broadly reflects the effect of inflation on office costs and on staff salaries,” said a Scottish Parliament spokeswoman

Blabbermouth Scots UKIP MEP launches foul-mouthed attack on Ruth Davidson

UKIP MEP David Coburn

UKIP MEP David Coburn

Well I can’t see this going down well in the LGBT Groups

UKIP’s only Scottish MEP has launched a foul-mouthed attack on fellow Scottish politicians. Blabbermouth David Coborn, the newly-elected UKIP MEP for Scotland, was overheard on a train journey slagging off a list of rivals. In quick succession fellow passengers heard him describe gay Tory leader Ruth Davidson as a “fat lesbian” and Scottish Labour leader Johann Lamont as a “fish wife”. Other passengers in the East Coast train journey last Sunday were shocked to overhear the UKIP politician launching loud personal attacks without a care for who was overhearing. As the insults flew Coborn told his travelling companion that the Greens were a “cult-like scientology” and made frequent references  to “Nigel” and Brussels.

The incident will be a major embarrassment to UKIP leader Nigel Farage whose party conference opens at Doncaster race course tomorrow. During the journey south last Sunday passengers in coach M of the East Coast train heard the loudmouthed MEP taking calls from party colleagues on how to target voters in Scotland. A number who witnessed Coburn’s tirade recounted how he told “Joe” on the other end of the line not to worry about the Greens. They described him saying: “Don’t worry, the sort of person who would vote for the Green Party would never vote for us.”

Coburn added: “Voting Green is a cult like Scientology or something.” In a previous call he discussed party funding and told a caller that  “my friend Maurice the Money will put the money up for that.” Coborn, who was born in Glasgow and lives in London, seemed very concerned that someone was leaking information on the party. He mentioned several times that they needed to “solve the Monkton problem”.

He then asked the caller not to talk to anyone about the matters they will be discussing at conference. Before signing off he told the caller that his prescription for the party was to “get rid of the old farts basically”. Yesterday 55-year-old openly gay MEP said he could not remember the details of every conversation he had on trains. He said: “I’m a fat Scotsman, there so. I don’t recall any of this.” A UKIP spokesman lated added: “David Coborn has no recollection of the alleged conversation.” Little has been seen of Coborn in Scotland since the unexpectedly won the country’s sixth Euro-seat in the May elections.

Scottish Independence could renew Labour

2505738647

Labour leader Ed Miliband with her Scottish Labour counterpart Johann Lamont.

I have said for a while now I think Labour has to come to a Yes way of thinking and I think they are, or there will be a Scottish Labour as many Scottish labour people are behind the Yes campaign. I think this is only seen if we look closely

IN JUST a month, Scots will vote on whether to become the world’s newest independent country.

If there is a Yes vote, serious issues will have to be resolved about whether we keep the pound in our pockets, nuclear submarines on the Clyde and membership of the European Union. These are all much bigger issues than the future of Scottish Labour. But if party members were to cast their ballot purely on the basis of political self-interest, they should vote for independence. Labour badly needs something new to meet the challenge of the SNP in the Scottish Parliament. I was part of Iain Gray’s media team during the 2011 election campaign, when the party slumped to its lowest share of the vote since 1923.

This was a shocking setback. The SNP made gains in constituencies that meet the very definition of “Labour heartland”. Even Keir Hardie’s home in Cumnock is now represented by a nationalist. The scale of the defeat was as unexpected as Partick Thistle picking up a victory at Old Trafford. Labour leader Ed Miliband responded by ordering a “root and branch” review of what went wrong and how it could be fixed. It would be wrong to say that nothing changed – but not enough has changed.

The position of the Scottish leader was enhanced, with Johann Lamont, at least in theory, now in charge of the whole party, rather than just the Scottish Parliamentary Group. There has also been reorganisation at a local level, with constituency Labour parties now based around Holyrood boundaries, rather than Westminster. However, the real challenge was to set out a bold and imaginative agenda that would make Scottish Labour
relevant again. Instead of hope and optimism we have had “Project Fear”. The referendum campaign seems to have crowded out the space for fresh thinking. Furthermore, as time has gone on there is a growing sense that the party’s institutions have reverted to type, with MPs at Westminster calling the shots. The most obvious example of the “wrong people” winning the argument inside the party is Labour’s lacklustre proposals for further devolution, which were published in March.

Instead of a commitment to devolve income tax in its entirety, which had been suggested a year earlier at the party conference in Perth, Labour published a much more limited plan for Holyrood to be given power to vary the rate of income tax by up to 15p. In addition, politicians in Edinburgh could raise, but not cut, the top rate for the highest earners. It felt like a big chance to define the debate on Labour’s terms had been passed over for an intellectually incoherent internal compromise. The policy-making process in the Labour Party has always been defined by different personalities and interest groups who tussle for influence, but since devolution no Scottish leader has had the ability to break through. I have a lot of respect for Johann Lamont, but she is being out-punched. So long as Labour’s crustiest dinosaurs in the House of Commons are able to set the ceiling on the party’s ambition for Scotland, it will struggle to challenge the SNP.

A Yes vote would end the divisions in the Labour Party between two separate groups at Westminster and Holyrood and bring its biggest hitters home. A-list politicians like Jim Murphy, Douglas Alexander and Margaret Curran would have to stand for the Scottish Parliament if they wanted to stay in politics. Independence would not necessar-ily mean that Scottish Labour moved to the left, or reconnected with communities that feel they have been ignored, but it would enable it to offer a much more credible alternative government. With the constitutional question settled, Labour might also stop defining itself in opposition to the SNP and begin to better articulate its own values. «
